Race Report: NHIS (09/06/07)
After hard training rides on Tues & Wed of this week, I wasnt sure i was up for a Thursday night race. I'm at the end of my intensity phase & im tired... plus, I want to do Milford on Sunday. All good reasons to just stay home & do my planned tempo ride.
But I decided to make the voyage up there. No expectations. Sit in, and get a moderate workout. no attacks. no breaks. no hard efforts. yeah, that lasted about 90 seconds, when on the first hill, some kid attacked & i immediately went. we stayed away for 3 laps and I picked up some series points. cool. but my lungs hurt. after we sat up, i stayed at the back for a few laps to recover. but it wasnt long before I found myself in another break. This cycle of break/recover happend a few times.
With 3 laps to go, I was tired. and sitting comfortable at the back. and by the back, i mean dead last. ha. but for some reason, with 1.5 laps to go, i said "im gonna win tonight". so with the ringing of the bell, i went from dead last to sticking my nose out front. i was hoping someone would be nice & let me in around 3rd wheel. not so. so i sat first wheel. not "quite" where i want to be.
The course has 2 hills in the back section. I hit the first hill, and just gunned it. as hard as i could. got to the top and realized it worked. i was alone. screamed down the hill and then gunned it up the next hill. still solo. cool, but i still got 3/4 of mile to go and this never works. nobody every wins solo for 1/2 of the final lap. but i pushed as hard as i could. hit the final turn before the 500' final stretch & looked back... they were gaining. i pushed & with 100' to go looked back & realized i was safe... coasted across the line solo.
from a training perspective, tonight might not have been the best idea... especially with Milford this weekend. but from a mental perspective, i really needed this. yes, its just a training race. but i needed to know that my hard work is paying off.

'just a training race' ... screw that. the other guys want to win just as bad. Congrats! Looks like you're good to go.
