do what you love...

what am i going to be when i grow up? man. i have been asking this question for like 30 years now. my co-worker asked "if you love bikes so much, how can you NOT have your own bike shop?" hmm.. good question. "if its something you love, it would be impossible to not be successful". i dont think its quite as simple as that. but he does have a point.

i feel so unmotivated & unproductive at work. mostly cause im bored & not interested in it. what would happen if i woke up every morning & got to do something that i loved. i mean really loved. hmmm.

people do it, right?

my neighbor & i were having this discussion the other day. despite having a great job & making tons of money, she doenst love what she does. she is also still holding onto the idea that there REALLY IS a perfect job out there. I dont know.
maybe. maybe not.

in many respects, my job is great. my boss is a sincerly nice person who cares about his employees. my co-workers are fun & good people. i have a flexable schedule that allows me to leave when i want to ride my bike. but the downside is that im not passionate about what i do. and i think thats something that is going to hold me back from being truely successful.

i keep putting this off, because it stresses me out. i would like to think that at some point i am going to figure this all out.

so in the meantime, if anyone has any pointers for opening a bike shop, or coffee shop, or vegan bakery, or any combination of the three, feel free to let me know.

can't really help ya out being as I'm...well still in college, but its interesting that "adults" have the same dilemma's that I do.

what am I passionate about? a lot of things. bikes. surfing. skiing. development in the 3rd world. (yea, odd one out).

where does the current course of study I am pursuing tend to lead a person? law school. (not to say I don't like what I am studying)

if you figure it all out, let me know please. :)

in the mean time..... ???

Adult is just a term. I think it applies more to behavior than age...

If you open a vegan bakery, I will be one of your best customers. Not that I'm vegan, but I find vegans generally pay a lot of attention to what they put in their bodies, and I like that. And I am never one to turn down good food. Maybe I can open it with you and do the non-vegan side of things...

Asking myself the same questions, but from the additional perspective of having started a business. I'm a crummy businessman so I'm making half as much money for longer hours and way more responsibility and worry.

Small biz, especially with a "craftsman" or "artisan" approach works great with you just have to make enough for yourself. It's a big step from a few folks who can sleep in the office or warehouse to creating a machine that several/many people can earn a decent wage and have some cash nearby.

Long-winded, sorry. Just want to say that when you are running a business, it's a business. And that can sap the passion out of the thing you love or at least make it really hard to have time and money to do that thing you love.

I hope my experience is the result of my being pretty slow on figuring out how to grow a business, and that you will do great.
